| In the past few year, Thai people have launched several
projects to help support themselves. Associations and the government
had promoted these projects. One of these project is called OTOP = One
Tambol (village) One Product. Each village are encouraged to present their
best local product (soap, clothes, fabric, handicraft, balm, natural
products etc...) under this project. Each product are examined and
tested for quality, safety, efficiency.
One of the village where these product come from is Kiriwon (or Kiriwong) village. This village is situated in the foot of Khao Luang mountain, south Thailand. In the 1988 the river who pass near this village flooded the area, killing many people, destroying houses, farming, everything (see picture). After that, the villagers decided to rebuilt the village together in an ecologic way. They start "multi-culture", or "suan somlom" in Thai language. A little bit of many different trees and plant, so they don't need fertilizer and insecticides. The fruits there are more tasty than everywhere else, and the farm land looks like a jungle. The villagers agreed as well to help each other to promote local products (self help project). Now, this village is a model and mayors from other villages will take their villagers to Kiriwon to show them how they can improve their life in an harmless way.
